In the run up to their fight last night, Bernard Hopkins taunted Joe Calzaghe by saying, “I would never let a white boy beat me.”
There are two problems with that. The obvious one is that it’s inappropriate for any athlete to make racial taunts toward his opponents. The second is that, as it turned out, Calzaghe did beat Hopkins. And after the fight, he didn’t let Hopkins forget what he had said.
Calzaghe told Hopkins afterward, “I whipped your ass. You had your ass kicked by the white boy.”
Calzaghe won the fight and therefore won the right to do a little post-fight gloating, but he would have been better off dropping the subject. Calzaghe is a great, classy champion, and he doesn’t need to stoop to the level of Hopkins, who is also great but somewhat less classy.
