When I think of a medicine ball I think of boxers or mma fighters using them to train with. The average person probably doesn’t own a medicine ball because they have no idea about how to use them or what they are good for. Medicine balls are great for developing strength, power, and agility. They come in various weights and sizes as well as being made from various materials such as leather.

A medicine ball can be used much like free weights in exercises such as squats or bicep curls. Often, you see the medicine ball being used between two people. This doesn’t mean you can’t exercise with one on your own. There are a lot of cool exercises that you can do by yourself with a medicine ball. I just learned about a several tonight after finding the following two videos.

Imagine how many calories you can burn doing some of these exercises! They also look like a lot of fun and a cool change of pace from your regular workout routine. Check them out below:

Whether you run outside or on a treadmill there are some things to keep in mind about your form. Bad form can lead to injury and make your running experience harder than it has to be.

Hunched Shoulders
I’m guilty of this one. You may catch yourself running at a good pace but then realize that you are tensing and hunching your shoulders up. This limits your arm movements and causes unnecessary stress. Be sure to keep your shoulders relaxed.

Feet Landing Too Hard
When you run, pay attention to how hard you land your feet. Your feet should not be slamming the ground. The hard impact is extra force that your body is absorbing which can lead to increased injury. The best thing to do is run tall and land lightly. Try not to bounce but stay closer to the ground.

Leaning Forward Too Much
Usually there is no real need to lean while you run (unless you are on a steep hill.) Leaning too much can add pressure to your lower back as well to the front of your knees. Remember to run tall.

Swinging Arms Too Much
You don’t need to have huge swinging motions in your arms when you run. Sometimes you may see people running with their arms down and forearms swinging back and forth. You can help avoid injury by keeping your hands close to the body and letting your arms move naturally.

This is a guest post by author Matthew Perry

I personally believe that proper meal plans and exercise can “fix” just about everything that ails us. And if you feel the same way, maybe something happened in your life to get you “moving”. As Oprah says, an “ah ha” moment…(not that I’m admitting to watching Oprah, I just think I heard that somewhere, yeah, that’s the ticket).

Maybe you put on a few extra pounds?
Maybe you noticed you weren’t as tight as you used to be?
Maybe you got short of breath tying your shoes?
Maybe you got winded shopping?
Maybe you just felt like poisoned crap?

Maybe your doctor said that you better get it together?
Maybe you developed diabetes?
Maybe you had high blood pressure?
Maybe hemorrhoids? (just making sure you’re paying attention…as exercise can help these)

If this email is old news, then you have already experienced your “trigger” point. If you have not already, then it’s time that you got pissed and listened to your body.

What was your trigger point? What was the final straw that got you to commit to a healthy lifestyle? Mine, even though I have been a fitness nut my whole life, was getting short of breath trying to tie my shoes. I had taken toooooo much time off of doing cardio and was only doing weights…I was out of balance so to speak. I remember sitting on the edge of my bed, bent down and was halfway through my second shoe lace and was labored. I stood up and looked in the mirror and went oh no, not me. That was all it took. But I was also ready, grasshopper.

Matthew Perry has been an avid health and fitness enthusiast his entire life. He worked for 8 years in the health club industry as part owner and manager of two successful health and fitness centers. This is where he honed his personal training skills and discovered his enthusiasm for helping people create healthier lives. His passion led him and his wife, Karen, to create 3rd Chance Fitness (www.3rdChanceFitness.com) and Muscle Memoryâ„¢ whey protein powder, the first in a line of health and nutritional supplements.

One machine that I rarely use in the gym is the leg press. It is often in use by others but the main reason I shy away from it is because I wasn’t exactly sure about the proper way to use it. With that being said, I looked up videos on how to use one and found a really good explanation below.

All machines in the gym can cause injury if you don’t know what you’re doing but specific ones such as the leg press machine can also cause lower back injuries if used improperly. Of course, watching a video helps but if you are having doubts, ask a personal trainer to go over it quickly with you.

I would like to thank iMedExchange for their continuing Premium Sponsorship at Kevin M.D.

If physicians want it, iMedExchange is building it…

It’s rare when a company actually listens to their customers. Even more rare when a company has enough insight into their market that they can anticipate their customer needs.

iMedExchange is accomplishing both. A seasoned team of Web 2.0/social networking gurus, along with a team of several hundred physician advisers, is quietly building a new model for physician social networking.

Not satisfied to merely provide clinical information and resources, the iMedExchange model takes into account the additional pressures and challenges facing today’s physician. Not only are they providing the forums and clinical information physicians want, word on the street is that they are using Web 2.0 technology to help physicians in their business — like help with finances and healthcare technology — and even for leisure, like sharing great wine tips.

Most recently, they built a tool that lets its members create their own groups, giving physicians the opportunity to have private conversations with other physicians who share their specific interests and issues.

iMedExchange technically hasn’t launched yet, but physicians can still join the site as they build it. Almost every time you log in there is a new tool or feature. Log in at www.imedexchange.com (they verify that you are a physician before you can enter the site) and start using their forums and groups.

Sponsorship opportunities continue to be available. This can be via a Standard Blogad or a customized package.

His passion led him and his wife, Karen, to create 3rd Chance Fitness (www.3rdChanceFitness.com) and Muscle Memoryâ„¢ whey protein powder, the first in a line of health and nutritional supplements.

A bone marrow transplant technique might be a life-saving treatment for some leukaemia patients reports the BBC. Cells in the newly transplanted bone marrow may help to kill the leukameia cells.

Some leukaemia patients who do not respond to conventional treatments may benefit from bone marrow transplants selected to target the cancer directly.

The technique, pioneered in Italy, uses transplants from family members who are not a perfect match.

“Natural killer” cells in the new bone marrow then attack the leukaemia.

Survival rates rose after the treatment, but UK experts say these need to be reproduced on a bigger scale and in different types of the disease.
Finding a donor is difficult because of rejection. Doctors have to look for a donor within the patient’s family and even then they might not be able to find a match. About a third of the population will never be able to use the technique. However, it is an important breakthrough that will need to be vetted with more trials - it could be a livesaver for some lucky enough to find a donor. A spokesperson for the Leukaemia Research Fund said, “If you are in the position of a patient who has not responded to treatment, the choice between a 2% chance of survival and a 30% chance is not a difficult one.”
